My experience with “My Maudlin Career” was an interesting one. I first heard of Camera Obscura when WYEP (a local radio station here in Pittsburgh) was spinning this album, mostly the song “French Navy.” I thoroughly enjoyed the song, so on a whim, I picked up the album while I was at the store one day. I tore it out of the plastic upon returning to my car and put it on for the ride home. ”French Navy” was the album's first track, and I enjoyed it. Then the rest of the album happened.
I've cleverly devised a chart to help me explain what I mean:

All this to say that I was somewhat disappointed.
It's not that the album is bad. In fact it's good in terms of talent and skill, but as I listened to it, I was having more and more trouble paying attention. In a word, the album is boring. It's sad, because I wanted very much to like it, and I tried my hardest to like it, but it just couldn't hold my interest. It just wasn't there for me.
It's hard not to expect more excitement from a Scottish indie-pop band nowadays, and in the end, “My Maudlin Career” just doesn't deliver. Even with their classy sound and smooth harmonies and wide array of big band sounds, I was bored.
Positives: The album certainly has a great classy feel, and the band is very talented.
Negatives: The album is boring, and the lyrics aren't really all that great.
The Verdict: Get “French Navy” (and “Honey in the Sun,” if you're so inclined) off iTunes and forget the rest of the album.
